This short film profiles AWARE, Singapore’s leading gender equality advocacy group. Shamima describes their work building community and industry capacity to challenge and prevent sexual harassment and violence in nightlife, and the impact of their collaboration with Good Night Out.

Working in collaboration with RASA Merseyside to deliver nightlife safety training to local venues, Dr. Quigg and her team conducted an independent evaluation of GNO and their work together, which demonstrated the difference that can be made when we create gender-informed, inclusive spaces to discuss sensitive topics alongside specialists.

Funded by the ROSA UK Fund for Women and Girls, GNO delivered training and accreditation to bars and venues across Birmingham City Centre, alongside workers from Birmingham and Solihull Women’s Aid. This describes how they will address and respond to harassment and discrimination with consequences and options for members. Despite increasing scholarly and media attention on sexual violence in public spaces, including those associated with the night-time economy and licensed venues, music festivals have been largely absent from research and policy. This paper presents the findings from the first UK study of sexual violence at music festivals, drawing on data from interviews with 13 women who have experienced some form of sexual harassment or assault at a festival.

Going for a night out should be safe in any city but in London reports of sexual harassment are on the rise. And for women in particular, it’s becoming a much more common experience. Figures from the Met Police show the number of reported sexual offences on licensed premises have gone up by about a third in the past three years. But Good Night Out is hoping its training will enable staff at clubs and bars to become more aware of how to help tackle this crime.

Harassment is never okay, and shouldn’t ruin your night out. That’s why Southwark Council created the Women’s Safety Charter and this training video, to give members of staff at any signatory venues, pubs, bars or clubs the skills they need to deal with, tackle and prevent harassment.
